Kitchen Reveal!

As y’all know my husband and I purchased our first home in June of this year. Then I went into full nesting mode…well..as much of a nesting mode as I could with a small budget and teaching full time. Needless to say, 3.5 months later and the first room in the house in finally complete! Say hello to our gorgeous kitchen!

We built this home from scratch through a builder developing a community. This was awesome because I was able to pick out cabinet design/finishes, countertops, backsplash, and flooring. But even with those custom designs it still didn’t quite feel like home when we moved in. Here is what the kitchen looked like before:

Want to know a secret? I never intended the cabinets to be so dark! I was aiming for a warm, distressed brown and I got dark chocolate instead. By the time I saw the cabinet color it was too late to change it so I had to adapt my vision to fit the dark lusciousness of these cabinets. My vision was soft brass and black metals with a vintage vibe. You know who took the most convincing? Getting my husband on board for brass cabinet pulls. This was a PROCESS. lol But now he absolutely loves them!

Way before we ever even closed on the house I was already spending hours on the computer every day researching inspiration for the kitchen. I can’t tell you how many pages upon pages of pendant lights I scrolled through! I even created concept boards to see how everything would look together – this is something I highly recommend doing! It helps put all of your separate pieces together so you can visually see how it would all look as a whole. I like to use Canva or Unfold for this.

This is one of the concepts I created for our kitchen. I used the iphone app Unfold.

As you can see I was really going for a black and brass look. And my concept mostly came to fruition in the final kitchen design. I ended up going with glass and antique brass schoolhouse pendant lights.

Pendants are from Wayfair- the finish is antique brass. Link

All of the customization’s we made in the kitchen are from Wayfair actually! The pendants, faucet, and cabinet pulls? Wayfair, friends. And all at super affordable and reasonable prices- AND good quality. I have expensive taste and a small budget so finding items that fit my budget AND my taste was important to me. That’s why I love Wayfair (and no this is not sponsored, I just really am THAT in love with Wayfair! P.S. It’s a dream to partner with them) They have soooo many options for any price range and good quality products. Also, their return policy is A+. I had ordered two other pendant lights to try out before landing on the schoolhouse one’s and I was able to return them no problem, plus they took care of the shipping costs for me. Thanks Wayfair!

I’ve always believed that the kitchen is the heart of the home, so this was the room we wanted to customize first and honestly, we spend the most time here and it feels so good to walk into a space that feels like us every day! We’ve ordered custom barstools from Bassett Furniture and I’ll update this post once we get them in.

The heart of the home.

Until then, I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing how we made small changes to customize our kitchen to our unique styles. This was a really fun project for me; next up the living and dining area!

Yours,

Meghan Laurel
